Understanding Embryonic Stem Cells

Understanding Embryonic Stem Cells

Douglas A. Melton, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, speaks on the controversial topic of embryonic stem cells, or ES cells. ES cells are cells that can be isolated from early embryos, before they differentiate into specific types of cells. Because stem cells have the potential to generate fresh, healthy cells of nearly any type, there is interest in exploring their use to treat and cure various diseases. The societal controversy regarding human ES cells relates primarily to their derivation from very early embryos. In addition, certain stem cell lines are developed using a cloning technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer, which can generate cells that are an exact genetic match to a patient.

How do these cells divide into all types of cells that form the ” animal ” ??
    WE DON’T KNOW
How did life came about ??
    WE DON’T KNOW
So the main point is :
    WE DON’T KNOW

finally an embryonic stem cell video that isn’t tinged with creationist propaganda.

GET IT STRAIGHT PEOPLE!!! BUSH DID NOT BAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH!! He banned the use of federal funds in the research beyond the existing lines in federally funded programs. PRIVATE companies could and can still do research with private funds as much as they want. NOTHING prevented them and they have been doing it at full force all along. Despite the presses assertion, federal funds aren’t necessary to do everything.

walmart sucks. so does GE, which is a major war profiteer. boycott industrial capitalism and you’ll do better.

ADULT stem cells have helped people to walk again AND cured a range of diseases. Embryonic stem cells have caused cancerous tumors in animal models. The embryonic cells have less of a potential just because of the massive side effects on both the ‘donor’ and recipent.

I’m sure you’ve heard about the recent news regarding GE’s hESCR. My husband and I have decided to start a grassroots effort to boycott GE products.
We have contacted Walmart at 1-800-Walmart and asked them to consider replacing GE products with competitors. We appealed to Walmart’s “family” image and suggested that it would be in Walmart’s interest to support our cause.
    PLEASE, pass it along!!!

    Az, Correction? I think not!
If you’re saying that ESCR has cured anything, you are wrong. If you are saying that ESCR has repaired severed spinal cords, you are wrong, again.
Az, since you’re young, I’ll cut you a little slack. Today, ASCR is helping people. Today,,,Not Maybe Tomorrow, or maybe in a year, or 10, 20, 30 or even 50 years, but Today.
And what of ESCR? It is producing Teratomas.

Correction, it hasn’t cured an ILLNESS as of yet. It HAS helped people, for examlpe, to walk again. Admittedly, it hasn’t cured cancer or anything like that, but that’s the point of RESEARCH. It has potential, so why not work with it?

  13. Comments  Unklebillybob   |  Wednesday, 07 July 2010 at 2:56 pm

However, the difference between ESCR and ASCR is that ASCR has been proven to be successful….And ESCR, through-out the entire world, has helped no one!

Thats why its called embryonic stem cell “research”. The whole purpose is to understand more about them….the application of what is learned comes at a much later stage.

Why do you think the physicists have spent billions of dollars smashing atomic particles eh? Its called “basic science research”, which is an incredibly important part of science.

some people don’t understand that stem cell research is the perfect way to advance into the future. we could make life longer. make new life. the possibilities are endless. we have to do this

Embryonic stem cells, ZERO – gee I wonder if that has anything to due with the fact that it wasn’t allowed to be researched until we got a democrat in office

  17. Comments  ParamorexFan636   |  Wednesday, 07 July 2010 at 5:21 pm

well, if we didn’t use those embryos, they would have been discarded anyway. and there are certain limitations to adult stem-cells.

Now i know that embrionic stem cell research has so far not given positive results but if we were to get a better grasp on it, we could make a break through.
Now i do not know if you are a women or not but say you are and you get pregnant but you would not be able to keep the baby. Now if one of your friends is in a car crash and she cannot walk. If someone told you that your egg could give your friend their legs back would you do it?

i dont expect u to put that though. :P

basically theyre cells that could turn into any other human cells, so you could use them to cure diseases and stuff by replacing essensial cells and junk

welll, we know that so far adult stem cells, which dont kill babies, has saved approximateley 2000 lives worldwide.

    Embryonic stem cells, ZERO.
