Dr. Klassen – Stem Cells & Eye Disease

Dr. Henry Klassen an assistant professor in UC Irvine Department of Ophthalmology is the principal investigator of a multi-university collaboration studying retinal reconstruction using stem cells. The long-standing research of Dr. Klassen focuses on using regenerative strategies to treat diseases of the retina, optic nerve, and retinal pigment epithelium the pigmented cell layer next to the retina that nourishes retinal visual cells. Dr. Klassen and his team are studying ways to regenerate cells through stem cell transplantation, and tissue engineering. His team is also investigating means to protect the retina and optic nerve from damage. Currently, they are conducting research with pigs to develop a retinal stem cell implant to replace diseased or damaged ones.

Patient First Act Adult Stem Cells HR 2807

Richard Burt MD has completed a study using adult stem cell therapy on patients that has been published in JAMA – The Journal of the American Medical Association. Three of his patients from the study that had received injections of their own adult stem cells, taken from their bone marrow, spoke in front of lawmakers in Washington DC. They are trying to get funding for the same adult stem cell therapy that has helped them. Dr. David Prentice PhD. of the Family Research Council thanked the bi-partisan group that sponsored the bill HR 2807 The Patient First Act that would seek funding for the therapies that wil help the patients first. The public should call lawmakers and have support them support the bill.
