Planarian Regeneration Part 1.mov

Planarian Regeneration Part 1.mov

Planaria are non-parasitic flatworms of the biological family Planariidae, belonging to the order Seriata. Planaria are common to many parts of the world, living in both saltwater and freshwater ponds and rivers. Some species are terrestrial and are found under logs, in or on the soil, and on plants in humid areas. These animals move by beating cilia on the ventral dermis, allowing them to glide along on a film of mucus. Some move by undulations of the whole body by the contractions of muscles built into the body membrane. They exhibit an extraordinary ability to regenerate lost body parts. So you dont actually have to reproduce them. Instead, you just cut them in half and they? keep multiplying

Selling planarians would be a good idea. If planarians are edible,? it would solve the problem of world hunger.

wow..so there is no difference? between reproduction and regeneration ?
what is the lifespan of the original versus split planarians ?
Is it possible to find a gene (or a set of genes) that make this possible ?

How to kill a planaria: Either wait 7? months for it to die from age, or cut off it’s feeding tubes.

A very good detailed video of regeneration. A quality supposedly present only in lower invertebrates and limited in vertebrates with exceptions. In the mythological stories of India, characters (human) had ability to regenerate lost or cut parts of the body – Like Ravana (the ten headed demon king), Mahishaasura from blood got new total body regenerated . However your video satisfies the biologic mind about the process of asexual reproduction in emergency- the? regeneration

hey!! we watched this in biology yesterday, and were doing a lab, we cut the planaria in several ways, and are watching them regenerate… its pretty cool?

@Reneator I know right! That’s why its a model for regeneration, the tremendous ability to regenerate is still a? mystery and the evolution of regeneration is basically unknown!

How might it be possible for that 1 to 270th size piece to regenerate to a full worm by? lacking enough energy in the remaining parts and lacking an food consumption system?
