In God We Teach – Official Trailer

In God We Teach – Official Trailer

Are teachers allowed to express their personal opinions in the classroom? Are teachers allowed “academic freedom”? And can competing theories be taught alongside evolution in a public classroom? These and other questions are the focus of the feature- length documentary, “In God We Teach,” which follows the “separation of church and state” controversy played out in a very public feud between a high school student and his history teacher in Kearny, NJ, a blue-collar, all-American town within sight of downtown New York. While most Americans claim to understand the concept of “separation of church and state,” few are sure of what is actually legal, and what is not when it comes to the public school classroom. And the misunderstandings continue. Isn’t America a Christian state founded on Judeo-Christian values, a single nation indivisible under God and whose currency stipulates that in God we trust? The role of religion had been central in American society from its founding to the present day, and remains a contentious topic in American life and politics. Passions run high on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, and the “ground-zero mosque.” While these religion-based culture wars continue, “In God We Teach” explores the way in which diverse opinions on the role of religion in the public space conflict and clash in our everyday lives. With discussion and analysis from such distinguished commentators as Alan Dershowitz, Barry Lynn, Kenneth

“THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS NOT IN ANY SENSE FOUNDED ON THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION.” (Treaty of Tripoli, Article 11: Written during? the Administration of George?? Washington and signed into law by John Adams.)

@bernygagne “No taxes means no organized society.”

So taxation is the only thing keeping organization on the planet?

Would it be bad to have a breakdown in this “system”?

The line is drawn when a group or individual starts demanding money at the threat of violence for their own group.

I don’t oppose paying for schools, roads, peace keeping officers(police), etc
I don’t oppose these services, what I am opposing is the violent monopoly the the group of people known as “the government” have.

@andrewcubsfan The problem with people deciding what taxes, if any, they will pay is it leads quickly to a complete breakdown in the system. I am forced to pay for military actions in the Middle East I do not support and that do not benefit me, yet I still have to pay. Where does one draw the line?
No taxes means no organized society.

@bernygagne Stolen money is money that is taken through violence or the threat of violence.

Don’t pay taxes anymore at all, instead give that money to a cause that you value or believe is effective. You will eventually have armed men show up at your door and forcefully remove you from your home and steal everything you own.

I don’t mind paying for people to learn, but I am currently forced at the threat of violence to pay for the current failed education system.

@andrewcubsfan Define stolen money. I don’t consider taxes stolen money. We as a society chose to pay for things of value to society. This included public education at one time.

@bernygagne I wasn’t defending religion at all….obviously you didn’t read far enough to notice that.

I oppose schools that are funded by stolen money, whether it be for god or science.

If I were there, I’d be that kid’s only friend, and defend him and work for his cause. I grew up in an overwhelming majority Christian community and I was ostracized too because I wasn’t Christian. Good for him.

Someone needs to pull his teaching credentials. He obvbiously has no concept of science as he can not separate mythology from fact. Only proven science belong in a science class, proven math in a math class etc. Maybe he would be happier teaching bronze age mythology in a private school.

“And can competing theories be taught alongside evolution in a public classroom?”

Lol… I don’t think they (schools) have the time to teach all the competing ‘theories’, there are thousands or religions with own gods and magic.
There is no reason to teach religion in school, only facts.

Looking forward to it, but also know I’m going to hate it because of the all the religious fundamentalists. Like the guy at the end who said, “We’re all sinners.”

That kind of thinking is fucked up in itself, but then to try and justify that your “loving” god made you that way because some chick was tricked by a talking snake into eating an apple? I almost want to go so far as to say these people shouldn’t have a say in the matter, because they don’t know fucking shit.

“Would Jesus boo me?” What the fuck kind of a question is that? Of course he wouldn’t boo you, idiot. You’re the one saying that Jesus is awesome. Why would Jesus be like “Boo! Stop supporting me!”

Oh. My bad. It was a rhetorical question.

@alienisuntverus What’s a violation of church/state separation is giving special, preferential treatment to any private organization based on what religion it is.

This includes not taxing christian churches while continuing to tax, say, druids because there aren’t enough of them.

Good on Matthew LaClair. I would have done the same thing had I had a teacher like David Paszkiewicz when I was in high school. Fairy tales have no business in science class.

@andrewcubsfan you’re free to keep your children at home and raise retards if you will. Religion has no place in a secular public school funded by public taxes. Not everyone believes in your religion. Besides, it has no place in science class. Ever.

@fictionalhead And that is different from today how? The pastors and priests already preach politics from the pulpit and urge their parishioners to vote a certain way. The only people who really care about the separation of church and state are those of us who see religion as rubbish.

  22. Comments  fictionalhead   |  Monday, 01 August 2011 at 5:46 am

@alienisuntverus As soon as you tax churches, they’re welcome to exert political pressure in a public way to affect policy the way other corporations do. Think about that for a minute. We already have enough ignorant people “voting Bible” before other issues, we don’t need the explicitly endorsed as well.
